Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

When nerves and/or blood vessels are compressed in the space between the lower neck and shoulder (known as the thoracic outlet) it can trigger symptoms of neck, shoulder and arm pain as well as decreased circulation and numbness and tingling in the arm and hand. The compression can result from tight muscles in the neck and upper chest, or very occasionally from an injury or extra rib. Massage therapy can help with this condition by decreasing muscle tension and by creating for the client a self care plan that can include stretching or strengthening exercises and postural correction techniques.
